Part of my artistic process is that I often have periods of being prolific contrasted with extended periods of being dark. During the dark period, I process my emotions and think about how to conceptualize them into art. I don’t feel compelled to create during these periods, and I don’t feel deprived or guilty for not being creative. Then when I’m ready to create, the work naturally flows out of me without a lot of thought since I’ve repeatedly worked through it, sometimes for years.
I’ve been processing and thinking about the amulet element for over three years. An amulet is an object whose most important characteristic is the power ascribed to it to protect its owner from danger or harm. In ancient Rome, amulets were associated between certain gemstones and gods, which seemed appropriate for an element. I’ve been thinking a lot about protection, keepsakes, personal rituals, shrines and memories. Some of the amulet elements are locket-like and can be “opened” to find a secret.
